IQ Facts
Snakes & Ladders
Snakes and Ladders is said to originate in India, dating back to the 16th century, as a game based on morality called ‘the ladder to salvation’. This game made its way to England and was eventually introduced in the United States of America in 1943.
From the simplest 1-25 snakes and ladders to the largest 1-100 version, IQ can install any combination of snakes and ladders to suit any requirement – we will also be willing to d/iscuss colours and number of ladders or snakes to ensure you get the best snakes and ladders to suit your school.
Chess
Chess is commonly believed to have originated in India during the Gupta Empire where its early form in the 6th century was known as caturanga and related to the 4 divisions of the military – infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively.
A big decision must be made when choosing our playground chess games – 1 or 2 colours!
Each can be used in the playground in exactly the same way: with 1 colour the asphalt becomes the second colour, with 2 colours (please feel free to choose the combination) you do get a more vibrant and dramatic effect.
Draughts
A similar game to draughts has been played for thousands of years. With a board resembling a draughts board being found dating from 3000 BC.
It was also said to have been played during the Trojan war and the Romans played a similar game called latrunculi – or little soldiers.
As with chess, playground draughts can be installed using 1 or 2 colours and the effects achieved can be vibrant and dramatic.
Ludo
Ludo is said to have originated in India by the 6th century when it was known as Pachisi and was played by the Mughal Emperors. Variations of the game made it to England during the British Raj when it appeared as Ludo around 1896.
Like the board game, playground ludo is a popular addition for the children to enjoy. Our versions come in a variety of colours and include both solid and outline material to give the most colourful and dramatic effect.
Noughts & Crosses (Tic Tac Toe)
It is said that a version of Tic Tac Toe originated in ancient Egypt. Our standard version of noughts and crosses measure 2m x 2m, though larger or smaller versions are available on request. We can supply the noughts and crosses in a variety of colours.
